SOUTH AFRICA

Elite Ops

So what happens when you take physically fit civilians into  Special Forces inspired training? Extreme athletes who believe they have what it takes to succeed?  The impact of this reality TV show was immense and life changing on much more than the physical side…

BBC Special Forces Ultimate Hell Week

In the first episode of the 2nd series of this reality TV show, I was able to give the contestants a flavor of South African Special Forces when the contestants arrived in SA and were “ambushed” on day one and put through their paces under the heat of the African sun.  See how this worked out for them…

SOUTH AFRICA

Elite Ops

I put the 24 contestants through ten days of rigorous training trying to make it through to the last day, inspired by the South African Special Forces training cycle.

Each day the contestants were evaluated based on their performance and ability to maintain the physical and psychological pressure that were put under, many were found lacking in mental toughness. Relying on physical toughness alone was not going to be enough.

True to the nature of the Special Forces selection process it was no picnic and most candidates were ill prepared, both mentally and physically for the hardships that they had to endure.

Through my years in Special forces and my involvement in the selection and training of special forces recruits I have come to realise that most candidates are physically quite capable of succeeding but they lack the mental fortitude to do so. Each element of the training is designed to test every limitation that you may have at the beginning and through individual endurance and teamwork you are pushed beyond these limits.

This was evident in the show and the feedback I received from some of the contestants was overwhelming.

One contestant said that he had quit studying but after working with me on the show was going back to finish the degree.

For me, life is about personal development, whether you are an elite athlete, or not. For a number of the contestants, while not succeeding to the end, it showed them that they were capable of doing more than they thought possible.

This is true in our day to day lives. While not everybody will succeed at what they set out to do they can at least give it their all when doing so. Failing is not failure when you get up and continue going.

We often want to focus only on the hard skills in order to become more efficient at doing things in life, but it is when we focus on being effective, that is when we start doing the right things. Emotional wholeness plays this part and allows you to navigate through the minefield of life in order to get to the point where you are effective and purposeful in your daily life.

While the show is about physical toughness, I am always looking to help people the softer issues, things like leadership, mental toughness, gentleness, patience, and other character traits that are important in us.

I was able to connect with a few of the contestants on a personal level during the show as well as after and have been able to share many personal interactions with them regarding some life challenges.

These challenges ranged from grieving a lost one to personal trauma to emotional brokenness and it has been rewarding to see how they have developed from these hardships and are able to help others in the same situations.

I believe that it is only during hardships that we are able to see ourselves for who we are and not for what we are and we are able to address our weaknesses and our shortcomings and our brokenness to turn them into something that our Creator can use for His good and for His purposes.

Suffering allows us to persevere and perseverance leads to hope and it is when we have hope that we are able to flourish and execute the calling of the Almighty one in our lives. That is why emotional wholeness is important to me and why I want to help people pursue this in their lives.
